Varroa Mite Management in Victoria

guidance for beekeepers

Varroa mite (Varroa destructor) is now present in Australia, and the national strategy has shifted from elimination to management of the pest. It is important that beekeepers continue to monitor and manage varroa to protect honeybee health.

The VAA Varroa Hub is your central resource for varroa mite management in Victoria, with information to help you identify, understand and treat varroa mites in your hives. Left unmanaged, an infestation can collapse a hive within one to two years.

Use the links below to explore the following topics:

  • How to detect varroa mite: including alcohol wash testing and other methods
  • Varroa mite treatment options: drone uncapping, oxalic acid, and more
  • Q and A: answers to the most important varroa-related questions
